Tri-State Area Airports Experiencing Major Delays

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - On one of the busier travel days of the year, severe weather moving into the East Coast is prompting major delays on flights leaving and entering New York area airports.

As of 1 p.m. on Friday, John F. Kennedy Airport was reporting departure delays averaging four and a half hours, while at Newark Airport delays were averaging four hours. La Guardia Airport saw average delays of two and half hours.

At Newark Airport, Terminal B saw most delays ranging from one to five hours on United and Spirit airlines, reports CBS2's Meg Baker.

The news followed a record-setting day at LaGuardia Airport where the most passengers ever went through security screening, with 59,698 travelers passed through the checkpoints and onto their departing gates.

The previous record was the previous year on June 25, 2018, when 58,617 passengers were screened at the LaGuardia.

"Travelers were getting a head start on their holiday travel and many departed for their holiday celebrations on Thursday," said Robert Duffy, the TSA's Federal Security Director for LaGuardia Airport. Both Passover and Easter are happening this weekend.
