Advocates Push For Affordable Housing At Harrison MTA Development

HARRISON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Affordable-housing advocates in Westchester County were expected to attend a Metropolitan Transportation Authority meeting Wednesday morning to push for units for low-income residents near the Harrison train station.

As WCBS 880's Paul Murnane reported, 143 apartments would be part of Metro-North's first transit-oriented development on three acres of MTA property.

Alec Roberts with Community Housing Innovations said 20 percent of the apartments should be set aside as affordable homes.

The MTA said that decision will be left up to the town and village of Harrison.

Roberts, however, argued that would be a bad move given the community's history of resistance.

"It's an abdication of any semblance of equity to allow this town to dictate how this public land is going to be administered," he said.

Robert is hoping the MTA and state will give a push that he is not seeing from county officials.

Mayor Ron Belmont told The Journal News that his administration is studying the issue.
