WOODLAND PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – To combat hunger in New Jersey, North Jersey Media Group Foundation will be holding its 23rd annual Action Against Hunger food drive on October 5, from noon to 4 p.m.

For those wanting to donate, there will be more than 100 drop-off locations across northern New Jersey, including many major supermarkets.

"Everyone needs to eat every single day and so we need to have donations coming in," Lynne Bruger, the development director at the CUMAC food pantry in Paterson, told 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet. "One the kind of adages that food pantries will share is 'hunger doesn't take a vacation.'"

"What happens when people don't have enough food? What happens when Johnny goes to school on an empty stomach? He can't learn," said Carolyn Lake, who works at the Morris County Interfaith Pantry.

One man standing in line to get food at CUMAC said he was a short order cook who found himself in need of the food pantry.

"It can happen to anyone," the man, named Herman, said. "You can lose your job today or tomorrow."

According to a news release from North Jersey Media Group, New Jersey ranks among the 10 worst states in reaching those eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
