The Department of Buildings was on scene and residents were eventually permitted to return to their apartments.

The alarms started going off at around 6:45 a.m.

"To be waken up with the heavy banging of the fire department, about 10 firemen outside your door," resident December Thomas said. "A family did come out. A young man was unresponsive. A whole family was rushed to the emergency room."

Residents said they were outside for a couple of hours.

Inspectors from the Department of Buildings Boiler Unit were among those on scene, but no cause was immediately given for the carbon monoxide leak.

However, resident Lanessa Leggett did point out, "We had no heat all week and then, finally, we get heat last night and then this happened this morning."

The FDNY and Department of Buildings said the incident remains under investigation.
