AAA Opposes City Taking Over Control Of Its Red Light Cameras
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - The New York City Council's proposed resolution to take over the city's red light cameras has been opposed by a powerful driver advocacy group.
AS WCBS 880's Rich Lamb reported, AAA is against the council's effort to shift control of the red light cameras from the state to the city.
"If the city were to take over the program, that it would mean lots of tickets going to drivers that perhaps don't deserve them and the erosion of credibility," AAA New York's Robert Sinclair, Jr. told Lamb. "We think, invariably, if the city were to operate home rule over the red light camera program that they would increase the number of cameras and we don't think that is necessarily - safety would be behind it."
Sinclair said the city has failed to make before-and-after accident reports of red light camera intersections available to the public.
"This can erode confidence on the part of the public that the program is nothing more than just a cash cow," said Sinclair.
Red light cameras so far have raked in $400 million for the city.
AAA, meantime, has voiced it support for upping the number of speed cameras near schools.
