2,000 New Yorkers Pack Food For Families In Need On 9/11 Day

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New Yorkers came together Sunday to help those in need and to honor those who died on 9/11.

A celebratory mood filled Basketball City at Pier 36, where around 2,000 New Yorkers came together to pack 500,000 boxes of food for those in need.

David Payne, co-founder of 9/11 Day, says he doesn't want New York to be defined by what the terrorists did 15 years ago. 

"There was also a lot of goodness that came from it," Payne told WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron. "The way the country came together, the way new Yorkers helped one another. we want to keep and continue that spirit of togetherness every 9/11."

Each box is filled with nonperishable foods that can feed a family of six.
