8 Long Island USPS Workers Arrested In Marijuana Theft, Delivery Scheme
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Eight postal workers may be headed to the joint over packages of pot.
The eight USPS workers at the Bethpage piority mail processing center have been arrested for allegedly intercepting and relabeling suspicious mail that was loaded with marijuana.
The workers were supposed to have notified law enforcement about the marijuana, but instead plucked the packages out of the processing line and slapped new delivery labels on them, according to authorities.
Federal Agents found 129 pounds of marijuana in 12 of the relabeled packages, authorities said.
"The conduct alleged in the criminal complaint is beyond disgraceful and our office will continue to tirelessly investigate those postal service employees who violate the public's trust," stated USPS-OIG Special Agent-in-Charge Rafael Medina. "The dedicated work of the hundreds of thousands of postal service employees should never be overshadowed by those who compromise their integrity for personal gain."
"Abusing their positions of trust as postal employees, the defendants allegedly stole hundreds of packages to further their drug dealing efforts," stated U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch.
Kempleton Nash, Jr., Eugene Williams, Timothy Marshall, Jerrod Rollerson, Tanicha Grenald-Allen, Sherwin Parkes, Lloyd Johnson and Jose Hurtado face mail theft and conspiracy charges.
