9 Hurt In Belt Parkway Hit-And-Run Crash; Search On For Driver
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Nine people, including several kids, were hurt in a hit-and-run on the Belt Parkway in East New York, Brooklyn early Sunday, involving a car that police said was stolen.
Eastbound lanes of the thoroughfare were shut down for several hours following the accident.
As CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported, blue birthday napkins were scattered all over the Belt Parkway, thrown from one of the cars in involved in the chain-reaction crash that left three vehicles crushed and mangled.
Police said the frightening turn of events started after police said a man stole a white Mercedes Benz from North Bergen, New Jersey and drove it into the city.
Just after 1 a.m. Sunday, investigators said the Mercedes was speeding along the eastbound side of the Belt Parkway with no headlights on, and crashed into the back of a blue four-door sedan near Erskine Street.
Johanna Taylor, 59, was driving the car with a 33-year-old woman three kids onboard – ages 8, 7, and 4. The intense impact sent Taylor's car flying into a gray Mitsubishi sport-utility vehicle with four adults on board.
The suspect kept driving and then crashed the Mercedes into a concrete wall and took off on foot, police said.
Taylor was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where she was in critical, but stable, condition late Sunday, according to authorities.
The children and the other woman who were in the car were also rushed to the hospital, and were treated and released.
The crash remained under investigation late Sunday and the suspect remained at large. No description of the suspect has been release.d.
