NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Police say a man is facing charges after allegedly stabbing his daughter then lying to officers about what happened.

The 55-year-old man initially told police his 6-year-old daughter was stabbed when two men tried to rob him around 12:30 a.m. Thursday near Monroe and Pike streets on the Lower East Side.

He claimed one suspect lunged at him with a sharp object and inadvertently stabbed his daughter in the abdomen.

The girl was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said Thursday night that the father had lied.

According to police, the father stabbed his daughter in Upper Manhattan, then traveled with her to the Lower East Side, where he made up the story.

The father has been charged with attempted manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
