Partial Platform Collapse Disrupts 5-Train Service In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The partial collapse of a subway platform brought 5-train service in part of the Bronx to a halt on Tuesday night.

Service between Eastchester-Dyre Avenue and East 180th Street was suspended in both directions late Tuesday due to a structural problem at the Eastchester-Dyre Avenue station, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The suspension was to continue until further notice.

Crews were working to repair a hole in the middle of an island platform after the 20-foot by 40-foot section of the platform fell. Firefighters believe the weight of construction machinery caused the area to fall. The accident did not happen where passengers stand.

No injuries were reported, and the collapse was under investigation.

The MTA suggested taking the 2-train and BX12, BX16, BX28, BX30, and BX38 buses as an alternative.

Straphangers were advised to allow for additional travel time.
