5 Girls On New Rochelle Track & Field Team Injured By Falling Fence

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Five girls on the New Rochelle track and field team were injured Saturday when a temporary fence set up for a discus tournament fell on top of them.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported, a strong gust of wind appeared to be what caused the fence to fall over.

Four of the girls were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The fifth girl was taken by her parent to her doctor.

A boys lacrosse player at the school told Baumgarten the fence was only held up by tape. Tape that was too weak to hold up against a strong gust of wind.

Witnesses said there was no warning that the fence would come down, but one parent said in retrospect it was pretty windy at the time.

Hours after the accident, kids were back on the field training for soccer and lacrosse. The fence remained strewn on the ground in one area.

The conditions of the five girls are unknown.
