4-Year Goethals Bridge Replacement Project Begins
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A $1.5 billion project to replace the Goethals Bridge is under way.
As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, the project has been on the drawing board for over a decade.
Now that permitting delays have been resolved, the port authority can move ahead and build its first new bridge in 83 years.
A relic of the roaring 20s, the Goethals Bridge connecting Staten Island and Elizabeth, N.J., is completely antiquated with its narrow lanes and no shoulders, Adams reported.

The new $1.5 billion cable-stayed span will have three lanes in each direction, wide shoulders, a walkway and space for future mass transit.
It's expected to ease congestion along the artery connecting Brooklyn, Staten Island and New Jersey and should improve the flow of commerce for the region's vital shipping industry.
The four-year project is slated to be complete in late 2017. It's expected to have a 100-year lifespan.
