NYC officer shoots sister, mother in apparent murder-suicide, police sources say
A police officer killed his sister and injured his mother in an apparent murder-suicide Thursday morning in New York City, police sources said.
Police responded to the building at 2500 Johnson Avenue in Spuyten Duyvil, the Bronx, at around 8 a.m., when the reception desk called 911 and reported multiple shots fired.
Inside, officers found a 55-year-old man with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and a 59-year-old woman shot in the head. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
An 86-year-old woman was rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her face. She was said to be in stable condition.
Police sources said the shooter was an active officer with the Port Authority Police Department. A firearm was recovered inside the apartment.
Jane Burbank, a neighbor, spoke fondly of the 59-year-old woman who died.
"She was a wonderful person, she was full of life. She loved to dance, she loved to get people together, she loved to cook, she loved to eat. She loved to travel, and was looking forward to her retirement so she could travel more," Burbank said.
The names of the three people who were shot have not been released at this time.
