3 Injured When Car Plows Into Irvington, N.J. Pathmark Store

IRVINGTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A quiet afternoon suddenly turned chaotic Friday, when a car plowed into a Pathmark supermarket in Irvington, N.J.

As CBS 2's Tracee Carrasco reported, the crash left a gaping hole in front of the store at 471 Lyons Ave. in Irvington. Crews were working to clean up the scene and repair the building.

The driver that crashed into the store may have suffered some kind of medical emergency at the time of the accident.

"He went straight on through the window," said witness Barry Hill.

The black Lincoln Town Car barreled right through the front of the store shortly after 1:30 p.m., officials said. The crash left a mess of broken glass and piles of concrete.

Hill was sitting outside when he heard screeching tires and saw the car speeding into the building.

"He was just coming. He was coming back. He took his wife home earlier and he must have forgotten something," Hill said. "It looked like he was accelerating about 70, 80 miles an hour, coming right there and he went straight through the window."

Hill said the driver was an older man, possibly in his 70s, may have had a heart attack.

His car hit two people inside the store. Witnesses say one of them, a female employee, may have been pinned, and all three were taken away by ambulance.

As the car was towed out of the store, the damage to the front end was easily seen.

K.C. Jones was just about to go into the grocery store when the accident happened, and said he was still shaken up by what he saw.

"A lot of us that were in the parking lot were scared at that point," Jones said.

As of 5 p.m., the store remained closed as crews cleared the damage.

The extent of the three victims' injuries was not immediately known.
