As smoke poured out of the home, neighbor Lawrence Leon and his brother came running with a ladder to help rescue people from the second floor.

"I grabbed the ladder so I could put it by the roof so they could be able to climb down," Leon told 1010 WINS' Roger Stern. "The first floor, there was too much smoke and nobody could come down."

He said one person jumped to safety, another was too scared to use the ladder and was rescued by firefighters while a third person came down on his own.

All three are in stable condition and are expected to recover.

No word on what caused the fire.
