25-Foot Whale Found Dead Near Brooklyn Army Terminal

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A 25-foot sei whale was found dead in New York Harbor near the Brooklyn Army Terminal Monday morning.

The NYPD Harbor Unit found the whale around 9:30 a.m.

It was taken to the Army Corps of Engineers facility in New Jersey where the Riverhead Foundation will conduct tests to determine cause of death.

The results of the initial necropsy are expected Tuesday, Rob DiGiovanni, executive director of the Riverhead Foundation, said.

"As far as any tissues or samples that are sent out, that could take weeks and months for those results to come back," DiGiovanni told WCBS 880.

The whale apparently had an injury to its dorsal fin, WCBS 880 reported.

Earlier this month, a 57-foot-long finback whale was found dead in New York Harbor.

In January, two whales were found beached in East Hampton on the same day.

"Last year was a busy year for dolphins and whales washing up," DiGiovanni said. "We had three times the normal average come up along our coastline."
