20-Inch Water Main Valve Breaks In Harlem

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A geyser of water erupted in Harlem Tuesday morning after a water main valve broke.

The incident took place at around 9 a.m.

Officials say crews with the Department of Environmental Protection were doing maintenance near Broadway and 125th Street.

During the maintenance, the workers turned one of the valves, which broke, DEP officials said. This caused an eruption of water from a 20-inch main.

The Department of Sanitation was brought in to sand the roads due to concern over icing amid the wintry cold snap.
