2-Year-Old Boy Dies After Plunging Out Window In Brooklyn
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Heartbroken relatives comforted each other outside the East New York, Brooklyn apartment complex where a 2-year-old boy tumbled out a sixth-floor window to his death.
One woman identified herself as the child's aunt.
"I can't speak right now. We're a little upset," she said.
The incident happened just after 11 a.m. on Monday. Police said the little boy's parents were sleeping inside the apartment on Eldert Lane, when the toddler somehow fell out a window that did not have window guards. EMS rushed him to Brookdale Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police said there were other people in the apartment at the time, including other children.
Neighbors said they were struggling to understand how the tragedy could have happened, some saying management always reminds tenants about building safety.
"They always, always, always do that," neighbor Hazeline McFarlane said.
"Whoever was the adult there, they're at fault," neighbor O'Neil White added. "I don't know who the person is, but consequences are coming to them."
"It's just so so so sad. It's just no words to describe the pain to lose a 2-year-old," City Councilman Charles Barron said.
It's not known why the window did not have a window guard. It is required by law in this type of building when the apartment houses children under the age of 10, CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported. The Department of Health is investigating.
No charges have been filed against the parents.
