NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two men will spend at least 40 years behind bars for fatally shooting an East Harlem man during an attempted robbery more than three years ago.

Ricky Billups and Moses Sharife were sentenced Thursday to 40 years to life in prison, WCBS 880's Irene Cornell reported.

The career robbers were convicted in the December 2011 death of Aaron Collins, 28, who was gunned down in the darkened stairwell of the East 105th Street building where he lived.

Collins was not the target of the robbery.

David Collins, the victim's older brother, spoke in court Thursday and called the crime "senseless."

"I looked at their family members. Their family members is crying," he told Cornell. "And they lost; we lost. And it was stupid."

David Collins said he plans to do everything in his power to make sure Billups and Shariff are never paroled.
