Police: 2 Men Found Dead In Mount Vernon Crash Suffered Gunshot Wounds
MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A car crash in Mount Vernon has turned into a double homicide investigation.
Police said the driver and passenger of a car that rolled over Wednesday morning were both shot.
"Once the victims of the crash were removed from the vehicle, the medical examiner determined that there was evidence that each of the individuals had suffered at least one gunshot wound,'' Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Terrance Raynor said at a City Hall news conference Thursday morning.
Chopper2 was over the scene early Wednesday morning. The crash happened just off the Hutchinson River Parkway, less than a mile north of the Bronx line, at 4:45 a.m. The BMW convertible struck a parked SUV and then flipped, landing upside-down.
Investigators said the victims, who are only being identified as a man from Manhattan and another man from the Bronx, were both targeted.
Raynor said the medical examiner was trying to establish if the men were killed by the gunfire or the crash. He said they had been shot in their "upper extremities," but wouldn't elaborate further.
So far, no arrests have been made.
The commissioner said investigators were trying to piece together the victims' movements "and determine whether or not they were with other people or whether they were alone'' before the crash.
