2 Local Residents Among Fort Hood Soldiers Killed In Texas Flooding

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork)-- Two of the nine Fort Hood soldiers killed during flooding in Texas were from the Tri-State area, CBS2 reports.

Staff Sergeant Miguel Colon-Vazquez of Brooklyn was honored with more than 20 awards and decorations since going active duty in 2003. He was 38 years old.

Private Tysheena James, of Jersey City, entered active duty in November of last year and has received several awards including the National Defense Service Medal. She was 21 years old.

The soldiers died after getting swept away in raging waters when their truck overturned in a creek during military training.

A GoFundMe page was set up to raise contributions to help Colon-Vazquez' family.
