Crane collapses at construction site in Hawthorne, 2 injured

HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- Two people were hurt, including one seriously, after a crane collapsed at a construction site in Westchester County on Thursday.

Chopper 2 was over the scene on Saw Mill River Road in Hawthorne just after 12:30 p.m. Pieces of the red crane were seen scattered on the roof of an Amazon construction site.

Mount Pleasant Police said one of the workers has a serious leg injury.

"The crane operator was not injured," Chief Paul Oliva said. "The crane did not flip over, but there was some sort of failure. Two persons were injured. One subject did have a partial leg amputation."

"The crash kept going on and on, so we all ran out. It was pretty scary, pretty scary," a witness said.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was on site investigating and the job site has been shut down for the time being.
