1 Suspect In Custody, 1 Hospitalized After Police-Involved Shooting In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A block in Brooklyn was shut down and swarming with police Monday after an officer shot a suspect who they thought was armed.

One suspect was arrested and another was hospitalized after the police-involved shooting, CBS2's Ali Bauman reported.

NYPD officers were responding to multiple 911 calls about an armed man in the area of Lenox Road between Bedford and Rogers Avenues in Prospect Lefferts Gardens around 5:45 p.m.

"Upon arriving, officers observed a man who did not match the description of the gunman in the 911 call holding a gun in front of 125 Lenox Road," said NYPD Chief of Department Terence Monahan.

Authorities said the man obeyed officers' orders to drop the weapon. Police recovered the gun from the scene.

As officers were arresting that suspect, another man came running toward them. Police opened fire, but later found he was unarmed.

"As we see the officers taking the suspects into custody, the suspect yelled out, quote, 'He coming. He gonna blast me.' At this point, a second individual rushed toward the officers," said Monahan.

Police said that man did match the description from the initial 911 call.

"Officers gave commands for the individual to back up and to show his hands. We then see the man rush towards our officers while also reaching into his waistband and quickly removing his hand," said Monahan.

One officer then fires his gun twice, hitting the suspect's right leg.

"The investigation is going on as to exactly what happened prior to the police arriving. There seemed to be some sort of dispute between these two individuals that we have in custody," Monahan said.

Police said the suspect who was shot is alert and conscious at the hospital, and being treated for his gunshot wound.

Both suspects were in custody at 11 p.m. Monday, but charges were pending.

The officers were also taken to the hospital for observation, but are otherwise OK.
