2 Employees Shot In Staten Island Bagel Store Robbery

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Police late Thursday were searching for two masked gunmen who shot two employees of a Staten Island bagel store in a predawn New Year's Day attack.

As 1010 WINS' Gary Baumgarten reported, two men considered themselves lucky. They said they were inside the Hot Bagels Deli on Arthur Kill Road, and ran out when the two men wearing ski masks stormed in.

The suspects brandished guns and ordered everyone to the floor. Two workers who did not immediately comply were shot in the torso, police said.

The shots had been fired "by the time we got to the car over there," one man said.

"It must have been a loud bang," another said.

The men said they then saw the suspects run out empty-handed.

The two have lived in the neighborhood all their lives, and said they felt comfortable going to the store after midnight for a bite to eat – until now.

Both shooting victims were rushed to North Shore-LIJ Health System Staten Island University Hospital North. They were expected to survive.
