2 Dead After SUV Found In Partially Frozen Pond In Piscataway, N.J.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two people are dead after their SUV was found in an icy pond Tuesday in Piscataway, New Jersey.

As CBS2's Meg Baker reported, the victims were identified as Tamequa Robinson of Edison and her 9-month-old son.

The Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office said the vehicle was discovered shortly after 5:30 a.m. in New Market Pond near Stelton Road and Lakeview Avenue.

Police said the small Nissan SUV was floating in the partially frozen water before being towed out at around 8 a.m. Its hood was crushed and its windows shattered.

Baker was told a garbage man spotted the vehicle and called 911.

The victims were pronounced dead at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

Employees of Omkara Auto Repair Shop across the street saw the aftermath.

"The police cars were here and so many cars. The whole street was blocked," Girish Modhwa told Baker.

Police are trying to piece together a timeline of when the SUV went into the water and how.

"They're checking the cameras and stuff, and see if they find anything," Modhwa added. "So sad."

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Piscataway Police Department at (732) 562-1100 or the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at (732) 745-3330.

CBS2's Meg Baker contributed to this report.
