12 Hurt After Fire Strikes East Harlem High-Rise

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A smoky blaze at an East Harlem apartment building has been brought under control.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight on the 17th floor of the Schomburg Plaza apartments at Fifth Avenue and 110th Street. Some of the fire extended to the 18th floor.

"I was just sleeping and all of a sudden my mother came into the room telling me, 'there's a fire, there's a fire," resident Cary Norris said. "So I got out, barefoot, and I ran down the stairs as quickly as I possibly could. There's smoke everywhere."

Fire officials said more than 140 firefighters rushed to the scene. The fire was extinguished at 1:21 a.m. Wednesday, about 90 minutes after it erupted.

The FDNY said 12 people suffered minor injuries, including two firefighters, CBS2's Andrea Grymes reported.

It's unclear what caused the fire at the multi-story building.

Most people have returned to their apartments.
