12 Hurt, 70 Displaced In Yonkers Fires
YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Three residents and nine firefighters have been injured in separate fires in Yonkers.
The Red Cross says about 70 residents were displaced.
Two men are in critical but stable condition after being rescued from a 3-alarm fire Tuesday evening that started on the top floor of a Riverdale Avenue residence.
Several hours later, firefighters responded to a 4-alarm fire at a multi-unit building on Beech Street.
Firefighters said the cold and icy conditions made battling the flames difficult.
"We had fire out of the rear of the building," said Assistant Fire Chief Mark Iannucci. "We had some frozen hydrants, we had some frozen water."
Assistant Fire Chief Edward Cucolo said despite the challenges, firefighters rescued eight people from the second and third floors.
"You've got to keep the water flowing through them," he said. "The minute you shut down a line to move it or advance it, the water freezes inside."
Authorities say one resident suffered a laceration to the hand. The nine firefighters suffered minor injuries.
It was not immediately known what started the fires.
