Officer Fires Shot At Man Who Allegedly Pointed Gun In East New York

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An officer fired a shot at a man who allegedly pointed a gun at officers in East New York, Brooklyn early Sunday, police said.

The plainclothes officers from the Brooklyn North Anti-Crime Unit were driving in an unmarked vehicle when they a suspect who appeared to be adjusting an item in his waistband at Dewitt Avenue and Hinsdale Street around 3 a.m. Sunday, police said.

The officers stopped and displayed their badges, but the man took the gun out of his waistband and ran off, police said.

The gunman ran off, and when officers chased him, he turned and pointed a weapon at them – prompting an officer to fire a single shot, police said.

No one was struck, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody at 743 Snediker Ave., between Linden Boulevard and Dewitt Avenue, in Brooklyn, police said.

The suspect, Moses Santana, 19, of Brooklyn, was charged with attempted assault with intent to cause serious injury, criminal possession of a weapon, attempted menacing, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana.

A .45-caliber High Point firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.
