Fire That Killed 12-Year-Old Boy, 69-Year-Old Man In Brooklyn Under Investigation

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A fire that killed a 12-year-old boy and a 69-year-old man in Brooklyn early Monday is under investigation.

Eleven other people, including firefighters, were injured, according to police.

Video of the scene shows flames shooting out of the fifth floor of the apartment building on Linden Boulevard and Bedford Avenue in Flatbush.

"I was actually awake and I heard somebody crying," said Deborah Bruno, who lives in the building.

Moments later, Bruno said, she heard banging at her door.

It was a neighbor warning her to get out.

"This is when I woke up other people who was in the apartment with me, to come outside," said Bruno. "I had a towel covering my head, then I ran outside because it was too much fire."

"It was really scary. It was a scary experience," she said.

The 911 call came in just before 2 a.m., when firefighters rushed to the scene.

The FDNY said the fire was on the top floor and cockloft.

"A lot of activity, a lot of people out in front," said Ron Williams, who lives next door.

Building workers cleaned up debris Monday morning.

They told CBS2 they're focused on figuring out exactly what happened.

The FDNY said five firefighters were hurt. One is in stable condition with serious injuries.
