5 More People Shot In Brooklyn, Hours After 1-Year-Old Boy Gunned Down While Sitting In His Stroller

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Gunfire erupted Monday night in the same borough where a 1-year-old was shot and killed not even 24 hours before.

Police surround a white car with a smashed bumper Monday night outside a motel on Conduit Boulevard in Canarsie, Brooklyn. Investigators believe its passengers abandoned it at around 6:30 p.m. after using it to pull off drive-by shootings of five people on three different blocks, CBS2's Ali Bauman reported.

All the victims are expected to survive, police said.

The 1-year-old, Davell Gardner Jr., died after being shot in the stomach while sitting in his stroller during a barbecue near a playground in Bedford-Stuyvesant on Sunday night.

No arrests have been made in either case.

Mayor Bill de Blasio held a moment of silence during Monday's press briefing and said he was "heartbroken" over the child's death.

"We've got to take resolve out of every situation like this. We can never give up," he said. "We can never give up on our children, we can never give up on our families, we can never give up on our neighborhoods -- no matter how tough it seems."

"It means the whole community has to be involved," he added. "It's never just about police. It has to be community and police together."

The shooting of the 1-year-old happened at around 11:30 p.m. Sunday outside Raymond Bush Playground on Madison Street.

Sources tell CBS2 police believe two men ambushed the victims and fired more than 20 rounds.

Three adults were also wounded, but were expected to survive.

Police Commissioner Dermot Shea visited the scene and offered his condolences to the family, CBS2's John Dias reported.

Advocates also showed up at the scene, people who've dealt with the loss of young loved ones, mothers who, themselves, know what it's like to go through something like this, CBS2's Kevin Rincon reported.

"You ain't not gangsta. You a punk. You a punk, with a gun. You think is going to make you a man, but it ain't," resident Erica Ford said.

"This whole block should be out here, because everyone knows who's doing what. They need to knock on those doors and say, listen, if you don't do something about it, we are," said Aaron Thomas of St. Albans, Queens.

The family of the 1-year-old lives in a shelter on Chester Street in Bed-Stuy. Throughout the day they sat out in front, grieving, hurt, and still trying to process what happened.

An uncle told Bauman he drove to the hospital as the 1-year-old was cradled in his mother's arms, Bauman reported.

"I feel bad. I feel like I didn't get there fast enough. I really tried my best to get him there as fast as I possibly could get him there," the uncle said.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family.

"I can't imagine what they're going through. It's really awful," resident Sarah Duffy said.

Others said they are just sick and tired of the senseless violence.

"Crime is up. People [are] shooting each other and killing each other. Got a lot of hatred going on," said William Berry. "We've got to learn to get together."

"Please put these guns down. We don't need no more of this," Tommy Holiday said. "When does this stop? Friday, my nephew was killed in East New York. Today, a 1-year-old baby. When does this stop? This is a shame, this is a 1-year-old baby seen no life yet."

Community advocate Tony Herbert said he wants to see the NYPD's Anti-Crime Unit back on the streets.

"The guns keep going off, and now we have a 1-year-old, and the blood is on the hands of this mayor and the state Legislature," he said. "They need to raise the mandatory minimum of anybody carrying an illegal firearm to 10 years, and I can guarantee it will reduce this amount of gun violence."

It was another violent weekend in New York City with 22 shootings and 28 victims.

Two hours earlier and nearly two miles away, another child was shot Sunday in Crown Heights.

Police said the 12-year-old boy was sitting in front of a home near Ralph Avenue and Prospect Place.

He was hospitalized in stable condition.

Authorities do not believe the shootings are related. The suspects in both incidents are still at large, and the motives remain unclear.

Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, who has called for changes within the NYPD, said the recent surge in violence has nothing to do with police funding.

"Everything that was wrong in these communities has been worse since the pandemic. Why did we think the gun violence issue wouldn't be part of that?" Williams said.

He said it is crucial community leaders and police work together to stop the violence.

"If you think law enforcement and police have no part to play, you are wrong in saying that. They have a part to play and many of us are going to do our best to make sure that part is done with equity and justice," Williams said.

Anyone with information about any of the shootings is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477), or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). You can also submit a tip via their website or on Twitter, @NYPDTips. All calls are kept confidential.
