Man Shot Dead By Police In Hackensack, N.J.

HACKENSACK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A man was killed Thursday afternoon in a police-involved shooting in Hackensack.

Around 5 p.m., officers were involved in a shooting at 185 Johnson Ave. in Hackensack, authorities told CBS2. Police were called to the building for a domestic disturbance, authorities said.

The Bergen County Prosecutor's office said one officer fired a weapon, and Raymond Peralta-Lantigua, 22, was struck and later died, prosecutors said.

No officers appeared to be injured, officials told CBS2.

Prosecutors did not specify what provoked the shooting, except that a knife was involved and was recovered at the scene.

As 1010 WINS' Carol D'Auria reported, Hackensack police shot another suspect three weeks ago.

On Thursday, May 21, police arrived at the house at 10 Temple Ave. because suspect Elvin Diaz, 24, was on parole and probation officers wanted to check out his condition and whereabouts, CBS2's Weijia Jiang reported at the time.

Diaz allegedly refused to drop a knife and was shot several times, 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported. Molinelli said a kitchen cleaver was recovered at the scene and that the investigation is ongoing.

Some residents believe police have been overzealous.

"They're taking advantage of their badge and their gun, and that's not how cops should you know respond to things. They were trained not to pull out a gun and get trigger happy," Sammy Faraj said.
