No. 1 Train Service Suspended All Weekend For Repairs

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The No. 1 train, one of the city's busiest lines, has shut down for the weekend, leaving riders scrambling to find other ways to get around.

The entire line is shut down in both directions between Riverdale and South Ferry because of major construction.

"It's really inconvenient," Kayla Griffith of Riverdale told CBS2's Ilana Gold.

"I think it's bad for the people who have to get around," said Derek Willis of Yonkers.

Straphangers can try the No. 2 and 3 trains, which will be making local stops between Chambers Street and 96th Street. Free shuttle buses will operate between No. 1 train stations south of Chambers Street and north of 96th Street.

Riders can also take the nearby A and C trains, as well as the M2 and M100 buses as an alternative.

Crews are repairing the brick arches inside several subway stations, fixing up the tracks and working to rebuild the South Ferry Station destroyed by Superstorm Sandy.

Service will remain suspended until 5 a.m. Monday.
