1 Person Hospitalized When Smaller Boat Hits Vessel Near Sandy Hook, N.J.

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- One person was injured Tuesday afternoon when a boat slammed into a nearly 1,000-foot vessel on the Atlantic Ocean near the Sandy Hook barrier spit.

The U.S. Coast Guard told CBS 2 the accident happened around 2 p.m. It involved a New York Pilot boat crew and a 984-foot cargo vessel.

The Pilot boat struck the vessel between Staten Island and Sandy Hook, N.J., the Coast Guard said.

One crewman from the pilot boat suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, according to the FDNY. He was taken to Seaview Hospital on Staten Island, the Coast Guard said.

Three others refused medical attention.

The cause of the accident was under investigation Tuesday night.
