Thousands of frozen turkeys donated at Bethpage food drive

There was an outpouring of generosity Friday on Long Island for its largest one-day food drive.

In the midst of what experts call a food insecurity crisis, community members turned out in Bethpage to donate thousands of frozen turkeys.

It's the 17th year Island Harvest has teamed up with FourLeaf Credit Union, and each year, the turkey count climbs higher.

As CBS News New York's Carolyn Gusoff reports, 1 in 12 Long Islanders now struggles with hunger.

Saying things are busy at the Community FoodBank of New Jersey doesn't begin to capture what's actually going on inside their warehouse, which is the size of about five football fields.

Hundreds of workers and thousands of volunteers work to collect and distribute about 6 million pounds of food.

Saturday, CBS News New York will once again be teaming up with the organization for our annual Turkey Drive.

Donations will support Garfield Unity Pantry

Garfield Unity Pantry's new way of helping with food insecurity

The Garfield Unity Pantry will receive some donations from the turkey drive to support its unique way of getting nutritious food to those in need.

Everything that winds up in people's carts there is free. Clients come once a month and have a selection of fresh produce; staples like eggs, milk and proteins; and reliable options of healthy basics.

Since opening a little over one year ago, the unity pantry has served more than 18,000 families and distributed about 750,000 pounds of food.
