Woman's leg mangled in fall into trash compactor

SALEM, Mass. -- A Massachusetts woman trying to fetch a pair of keys fell three stories into an apartment building's trash compactor which then turned on and mangled her leg, CBS Boston reported.

A frantic 911 call led police officers to the Loring Towers apartment complex in Salem at about 4 a.m. Monday morning.

Officers say the 38-year-old victim was helping a man retrieve his keys, which had fallen down the trash chute. He offered the woman $20 for her help.

After numerous failed attempts, the man lowered the victim into the compactor using a sheet tied to her legs. That sheet broke and the woman fell into the dumpster.

The compactor was activated and crushed the woman's leg.

The woman was rushed to Mass. General Hospital and is expected to survive, but she suffered severe leg injuries.

No charges have been filed. The incident remains under investigation.
