Woman who murdered new mom to take baby sentenced

RINGGOLD, Ga. - A Tennessee woman was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for gunning down a northwest Georgia mother in September 2014, because she wanted the woman's newborn baby.

CBS affiliate WDEF reports that Catherine Goins entered a guilty plea on Friday to charges of murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery and kidnapping. On Sept. 19, 2014, young mother Natalia Roberts responded to a Craigslist listing posted by Goins, advertising baby clothes.

When Roberts was inside Goins' Ringgold, Georgia, home, Goins shot her in the back of the head. Goins then took Roberts' two children and the family vehicle, but later returned to the crime scene to clean it up, according to authorities.

Goins, 37 of Hixson, Tennessee, originally told investigators that she shot Roberts in self-defense, saying Roberts was trying to break into her home.

But officials said Goins wanted the victim's infant to cover up her own faked pregnancy.

She was arrested days later in Tennessee, and charged with Roberts' murder.
