Woman shot twice in the head while driving in Atlanta
ATLANTA -- Police say a 24-year-old woman has died after she being shot at least twice in the head while driving in southwest Atlanta.
Atlanta police Maj. Adam Lee III tells news outlets that officers responding to a report of a car fire Thursday morning found the woman behind the steering wheel of a vehicle wedged between trees and shrubbery. Lee told the Atlanta-Journal Constitution the vehicle veered off the road after the woman was shot.
Lee says the woman still had her foot on the accelerator, causing the car wheels to spin and produce smoke. She was pronounced dead at a hospital.
CBS Atlanta identified the victim as Shanna Smith.
"Like 'boom boom boom.' Like they were using a number of guns," Nakie Page, who heard the incident, told the station.
Police found nearly 30 shell casings near the scene, but investigators aren't sure if some of those casings are from an earlier incident on the street.
Police do not have any suspects in custody. It's unclear if Smith was the intended target.
