Woman arrested after damaging controversial holiday display

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Authorities say a woman is in custody after a Satanic Temple holiday display at the Florida Capitol was damaged.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement spokeswoman Samantha Andrews said Tuesday the woman is facing charges. The woman's name wasn't immediately released.

The display shows an angel falling into a pit of fire. "Happy Holidays from the Satanic Temple," it says. It went up Monday.

The Department of Management Services rejected the Satanic Temple's display last year, saying it was "grossly offensive."

The state allowed it this year, following threats of legal action from the Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

Groups in recent years have been allowed to erect religious displays in the Statehouse rotunda because the area is considered to be a public forum. Non-religious groups responded with displays that included a "Seinfelst" Festivus pole made of beer cans and a depiction of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
