West Point football player killed in car wreck just after team win

WEST POINT, N.Y. - An Army West Point football player from New York City has died in a car accident hours after helping his team win its second straight game.

The U.S. Military Academy says Monday that 20-year-old sophomore Cadet Brandon Jackson from Queens died in a single-car accident Sunday in Westchester County, north of New York City.

Police in Croton-on-Hudson said Jackson hit a guardrail while driving around 1:50 a.m. Sunday. The accident is under investigation.

Jackson was a starting defensive back and recorded two solo tackles and one assist in Army’s 31-14 home win Saturday over Rice. Army is 2-0.

Head coach Jeff Monken called Jackson a beloved teammate.

West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen Jr. said Jackson was following the example of his mother, an Iraq War veteran.

According to West Point’s official bio, Jackson appeared in every game as a freshman, and led the team with three interceptions.

Several players and fans took to social media to mourn his passing.
