Watch the new trailer for "Independence Day: Resurgence"

Alien series "Independence Day" returns this summer, and the trailer for "Resurgence" is here.

The text on screen reads ominously, "We always knew they would come back."

Jeff Goldblum returns in the sequel to the hit 1996 movie as David Levinson. In the trailer, he says, "I spent 20 years trying to get us ready for this. We used their technology to strengthen our planet, but it won't be enough."

Then former President Thomas J. Whitmore, played by Bill Pullman, says he sees the aliens in his dreams, and he knows they are coming back.

In a voiceover, he says, "Today you will once again be fighting for our freedom -- not from tyranny, oppression or persecution, but from annihilation."

The trailer sees the world under siege, but this time, Will Smith's character, Steven Hiller, won't be present: The movie's website explains that he was killed in a fire after a technical malfunction.

Another missing actor? Mae Whitman won't reprise her role as first daughter Patricia Whitmore, and has been replaced by Maika Monroe -- a move that elicited plenty of criticism on social media and a string of broken heart emojis from Whitman.

The movie is slated for release on June 24, 2016.
