Virginia man charged with murder in 1983 disappearance

STAUNTON, Va. -- An 84-year-old Staunton man has been charged with first-degree murder in the 1983 disappearance of another man.

A grand jury on Monday indicted Charles Almond of Staunton -- about 40 miles west of Charlottesville -- for the disappearance of 20-year-old Richard "Pete" Miller Jr., reports CBS affiliate WCAV.

The station reports that the grand jury was called to compel witnesses who refused to cooperate with investigators in the case.

Miller, of Swoope, Va., was an employee of The News Leader, a Virginia newspaper that reports he was last seen on Nov. 17, 1983, as he drove to work.

Augusta County Commonwealth's Attorney A. Lee Ervin said Tuesday that Miller vanished under "very suspicious circumstances" in 1983. No trace of him was ever found.

His pickup truck was found on Dec. 14, 1983, in Richmond. The newspaper says Miller was engaged to Almond's daughter.
