Viewers rave about finale of "The Legend of Korra"

"The Legend of Korra" came to a close last week -- and the finale continues to have fans all abuzz.

[Spoiler Alert]

Nickelodeon's animated spinoff to "Avatar: The Last Airbender" wrapped with a two-part finale, dubbed "Day of the Colossus"/"The Last Stand." And though the entire season had fans glued from week to week -- it was the final scene that really struck a chord. At the end, Korra and Asami held hands and walked off into the Spirit World together. Although the girls didn't kiss, many viewers see it as major move in children's television.

"Putting a same-sex relationship in a cartoon is a pretty progressive move," notes The Huffington Post.

Vanity Fair chimes in, "So that's how The Legend of Korra, a Nickelodeon cartoon, changed the face of TV last night. Call it groundbreaking, call it earth-bending, call it whatever you like. It was great television."

Forbes also praised the finale: "'The Legend of Korra' ended up having fights for the kids, adventure for the pre-teens, romances for the teens, history for the young adults and a coming of age story that never gender-restricted its hero. As 52 episodes of television, it will be remembered for all these things. For those of us who stuck with it from the premiere, it literally manifested our dreams."

Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of the series, spoke with The Wall Street Journal back in November about fans' interest in the characters' dating habits: "This is my new theory. Fans are more interested in imagining relationships between a myriad of pairings. But they're profoundly disinterested in seeing any of those things manifest themselves on the show. So who knows, whatever. Mike and I as writers, we wrote it the way we found it to be entertaining, and that struck a chord with some, but maybe not with some others."
