Dramatic video shows little girl pulled from rubble after airstrike

Syria talks fall apart as airstrikes worsen

Syria’s war against rebel forces is back in full swing following the inglorious collapse of the Russian-U.S. cease-fire, and civilians in the embattled eastern part of Aleppo are again bearing the brunt of the onslaught.

Dramatic video obtained by CBS News partner network Sky News shows rescuers locating and then frantically but carefully removing a girl, identified as Rawan Alowsh, from the crumbled concrete of her family home.

Her three sisters, one brother, mother and father were among an unknown number of civilians killed in ramped-up airstrikes by Russian or Syrian aircraft in rebel-held parts of Aleppo Friday, according to activists and monitoring groups.

Shelling continues in Syria with cease-fire in tatters

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based monitoring group, and other activists said at least seven people were killed Thursday night, including women and children.

As soon as Alowsh’s head is freed from the rubble she begins to wail in pain in the video obtained by Sky News. A small group of rescuers manage to clear enough of the concrete and dirt off her lower body to free her and rush her to a waiting ambulance.

Her fate after being rescued from the building in Aleppo’s Bab al Nairab district remains unknown, but she appears to remain conscious until she is put into the ambulance.

The dramatic video surfaced Friday as members of the volunteer Syrian Civil Defense force, known as the White Helmets, said Russian aircraft had destroyed two of their four centers in rebel-held Aleppo.

Civilian and medical facilities -- including an aid convoy hit Monday -- have come under increasing fire around Aleppo following the disintegration of the cease-fire deal.

Syria’s army announced a new offensive to reclaim rebel-held parts of the city on Thursday night.
