Video: New Mexico man attacked in police station parking lot

Man allegedly assaults ex's boyfriend in front of police station

ROSWELL, N.M. -- Surveillance video shows the moments one man attacked another just feet away from the front door of the police department in Roswell, N.M.

Police say Sergio Vazquez, 33, first fired a BB gun into the passenger side of a red pickup truck, while it was parked at a red light not far from the police station on July 9. The victim was in the car with a woman with whom police say Vazquez previously had a romantic relationship.

Neither of them was struck by the shot, according to police.

After the shooting, the man and woman fled to the police station, with Vazquez in pursuit, according to investigators.

As they arrived, Vazquez pulled his SUV alongside the pickup's passenger-side door. The suspect can be seen on surveillance video getting out of his car, opening the other man's door, and punching him. The suspect then starts to close the door, before lobbing a new series of punches at the fleeing victim -- including one that knocked out the window previously damaged by the BB gun, according to police.

Roswell police Public Information Officer Todd Wildermuth told 48 Hours' Crimesider that the man did not suffer any serious injuries in the attack.

"He took the punches, but the guy walked away pretty much no worse for the wear," Wildermuth said.

On video, the suspect can be seen punching the victim several times in the back of the head, as he followed the victim toward the back of the pickup truck.

Five police officers, four with guns drawn, can then be seen surrounding the suspect, and arresting him.

Vasquez was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and aggravated burglary, for allegedly forcibly entering a vehicle.
