Video: Deputy who meant to pull out Taser shoots teen
BALDWIN COUNTY, Ga. — Body cam footage shows the moment a Georgia deputy shot a man after apparently mistaking his gun for a Taser, reports CBS affiliate WMAZ.
Baldwin County Deputy Charles Gillis and another officer were responding to a report of a domestic dispute between 18-year old Jamel Jackson on Oct. 9 when the shooting occurred, according to the sheriff's department.
Deputies said Jackson struggled when they tried to place him under arrest. In the video, a deputy can be heard yelling, "Taser, taser," during the confrontation. Gillis can then be seen pulling out what appears to be a gun, before one shot is heard.
Jackson was struck once in the arm. He was treated at a local hospital and released the next day. He is currently being held in the county's jail.
Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee told the Union-Recorder newspaper that Gillis had intended to use a Taser, not his gun.
Gillis is on paid administrative leave. The Georgia Burea of Investigation has turned its findings over to a district attorney. Gillis has not been charged in the case.
