Vanessa Marcotte case: Man indicted for murder of Google employee slain during jog
WORCESTER, Mass. -- A man accused of killing a Google employee who went out for a run near her mother's Massachusetts home last summer has been indicted for murder.
Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. says a grand jury handed down the indictment Friday against Angelo Colon-Ortiz.
The Worcester resident was arrested in connection with the death of 27-year-old New York City resident Vanessa Marcotte last August in Princeton, a small town 40 miles west of Boston. Her body was found in the woods not far from her mother's home, battered and partially undressed.
Police received more than 1,300 tips during the investigation into Marcotte's killing. The break came in April when an alert Massachusetts state trooper recognized Colon-Ortiz driving in the same dark SUV spotted near the crime scene.
Prosecutors say investigators tracked down Colon-Ortiz and he voluntarily gave a DNA sample, which matched DNA found on Marcotte's hands.
Colon-Ortiz has been in custody since his arrest on charges of aggravated assault and battery and assault with attempt to rape. Those charges will be dismissed when he is arraigned on the murder charge, reports CBS Boston.
His lawyer hasn't commented. He is reportedly being held on $10 million bail.
