Man charged with murder after father's body found in freezer

SALT LAKE CITY -- A Utah man is facing charges of murder and desecration of a corpse after his father's body was found in a freezer, officials say.

Charges say police came to the family's Provo house on June 9 after Omar Carmona's mother reported her husband missing.

Police say Omar Carmona, 27, was angry because his father, Marco Carmona, didn't believe that someone could break in to their mobile home and hurt him while he was taking a shower, according to police.

The two fought, and authorities say Carmona wrapped his arm around his father's throat. He allegedly held on for 20 minutes as his father struggled, leaving scratches on his son's chest and back. When his father grew motionless, Omar Carmona dragged his body to the chest freezer in the living room, put him inside and plugged it in, police allege.

He took his father's cellphone and wallet out of his pockets before closing the freezer door, according to court documents. The younger Carmona also allegedly took money from his father's truck and hid his cell phone, reports CBS affiliate KUTV.

Police say Omar Carmona told them what happened after they asked where his father was.

Court records show Omar Carmona has previously gotten mental health treatment after attacking his father in 2014, according to CBS affiliate KUTV. He allegedly kept his father in a room against his will until police arrived and knocked on the door.

According to the reports, Marco Carmona told police that his son was violent and aggressive when he got upset and added that he was a regular drug user. Police had visited the same residence several times and were reportedly aware of the health issues, according to the station.

His attorney could not immediately be reached for comment.
