Mom, daughter rescued after lost for days on hike

Mother, daughter survive four nights lost in New Zealand wilderness

An American mother and her daughter were rescued on Saturday after spending four nights lost during a hike in New Zealand, police said.

Sgt. Anthony Harmer of Wellington Police Search and Rescue told reporters Carolyn and Rachel Lloyd had planned for a day's walk at the Kapakapanui Track north of Wellington on Tuesday but became stranded in rough terrain after not being able to find their way back.

Harmer said they survived by staying calm and sticking together for warmth.

They were spotted by a rescue helicopter and taken to a Wellington hospital, where they were being treated for dehydration and exhaustion, Harmer said.

The mother was visiting her daughter, who is studying in the country, Harmer said.
