Police told reporters that both suspects are enrolled in Parkland College, and targeted the victim to rob him of a small amount of marijuana and cash. They would not say which suspect allegedly killed Mundo.

A gun, the suspected murder weapon, was recovered on Tuesday morning, according to the station.

Mundo had left a friend's off-campus apartment and was heading back home to his own on Sunday, Jan. 25, his sister previously told the station. He was reportedly never heard from or seen again until his body was discovered on a rural road in Champaign County.

Police told the station there is no connection between Mundo's death and the New Year's Eve disappearance of another University of Illinois student, 23-year-old Christian Zamora, who was reportedly last seen walking to a Champaign grocery store.
