Two charged in fatal attack on UNC professor

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has died after an attack near campus, and two men face multiple charges in the incident.

According to police, 59-year-old Feng Liu suffered serious head wounds Wednesday and was taken to UNC Hospitals. He died Thursday.

Chapel Hill police spokesman Lt. Josh Mecimore said information from a passerby helped lead police to the suspects. Mecimore was not available to comment on a possible motive for the attack.

Authorities say 23-year-old Derick Davis II of Durham and 27-year-old Troy Arrington Jr. of Chapel Hill face first-degree murder and other charges. The two men appeared in court Thursday, and it's not known if either man has an attorney.

Liu was a research professor in UNC's Eshelman School of Pharmacy.
